Florida Boating Safety Requirements

August 1, 2022

Anyone operating a vessel powered by ten-horsepower (or larger) motor, who was born on or after January 1, 1988,  must complete and pass an approved boater safety course. In addition, the driver of the boat must have in his or her possession a photo ID and a boating safety education card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

If a visiting boater has successfully completed an approved boater safety course or have taken an equivalency examination in another state, the visiting boater is exempt from Florida licensure requirements.

Temporary and permanent Florida residents can take the one-time Florida Boater Examination online (approximately $35) to receive a Florida Boating Safety Education I.D. Card. There is not a separate jet ski or personal watercraft license but all operators of personal watercraft must be at least 14 years of age and possess a Florida boater safety card.

Mandated Boat Safety Equipment

Florida boat safety requirements vary depending on the date the vessel was manufactured and the size of the boat (yacht, ski boat, canoe, kayak, etc.), plus where the boat is being operated. At the very least, any vessel operated on Florida waterways should include one Coast Guard approved Type I, II, or III personal flotation device (PFD) for each person on board as well as for anyone being towed on water skis or other aquaplaning devices.

A fire extinguisher or extinguishers should on board in appropriate numbers for the particular type and size of the watercraft. Visual distress signals are indicated for operating a boat offshore as well as cruising the Intercoastal Waterway. Sound devices like horns, whistles or bells, backfire flame control and ventilation systems, boat lighting equipment, and a paddle may also be mandatory equipment based on the type of boat and intended usage.

Boating on the First Coast of Florida

Jacksonville has it all. Located at the mouth of the St. Johns River, it is a gateway to state's major interior waterway. Heading east, the river provides access to both the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. With a variety of first-class marinas, boating supply stores, near-the-water hotels, and five-star restaurants, the city caters to the boating crowd downtown, further inland, and at all First Coast beaches.

Jacksonville also hosts a number of popular waterfront festivals and there is ample dockage downtown, including the Metropolitan Park Marina. Boaters can linger for a few days or check Florida’s array of world-class fishing opportunities. In fact, shallow-water fishing in the salt marshes is as good as it gets and many Jacksonville marinas are within the official boundaries for access to the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament.

About 40 miles to the south, St. Augustine is the nation's first seaport. Many area boaters enjoy casual trips offshore or down the Intracoastal to dock at the country’s oldest city. The City Marina allows sailors and crews to explore on foot the 144-block national historic district and the Castillo de San Marcos (a Spanish fortress built in 1672). For deep sea fishing, the Gulf Stream runs a few miles offshore and provides endless opportunities for blue-water anglers.

Boat & Personal Watercraft Insurance

Although boat insurance is not required in Florida, owners should consider purchasing insurance for vessels that exceed a thousand dollars in value. That is about the same amount of limited coverage provided by most resident’s homeowners insurance policy. At Nsurance Nation, our experienced agents can provide you with competitive quotes for boat insurance coverage for:

  • Damage coverage to your vessel and personal property (minus the specified deductible) regardless of whether an accident occurred on the trailer or on the water.
  • Liability coverage in case you are at fault for a boating accident and deemed responsible for any damages and injuries you may have caused to others.
  • Medical payments coverage in case you or your passengers sustain any injuries due to a boating accident.
  • Uninsured boaters coverage to pay for damage or injuries you might receive in an accident with an underinsured vessel.
  • Towing coverage in case you become stranded on the water and need to be towed to port.

The competitive quotes you receive from Nsurance Nation will be based on your vessel’s current value, where you plan to operate the watercraft, and for what purposes you plan to use the boat. If you have recently moved to the Sunshine State, Florida boat insurance may seem higher than where you lived as owners enjoy seasonally good weather and most operators use their boat year-round.
